EXPRESS ENTRY SYSTEM

Express Entry (EE) is an online immigration application system. It allows people to submit a profile and be considered as a skilled immigrant. Candidates with the highest rankings are invited to apply for permanent residency.

How does EE works?

If you fill out a profile for Express Entry, your application will be ranked according to a points system.

  • If you are highly ranked, you will be invited to apply for permanent residence as a skilled immigrant.
  • Once you have applied, your PR application will then be processed within the next 6 months.
Which Immigration Programs Does EE Cover?

You must use Express Entry to apply for:

  • The Skilled Worker Program
  • The Skilled Trades Program
  • The Canadian Experience Class

Some candidates for Ontario’s Provincial Nominee Program are also selected through Express Entry.

Do I Qualify for EE?

You qualify for Express Entry if you meet the eligibility criteria for the Skilled Worker program, Skilled Trades program, or Canadian Experience Class.

How are EE profile points determined?

Your Express Entry profile will get points based on:

  • Your education level;
  • Your abilities in English and/or French (Canada's 2 official languages);
  • Your work experience and skills;
  • Your age;
  • If you have a job offer in Canada; and
  • Your spouse's education, language abilities and work experience.

Additional points are also awarded if you have completed a college or university program in Canada or if you have a provincial nomination.

This chart outlines the points you can get for each category. Please note that EE points are different from the Federal Skilled Worker point system.

How Does EE Choose People for PR?

  • Once you submit a profile, your profile will be entered into a pool (group) of all the people who have currently applied for Express Entry.

  • You will then be ranked against other people in the pool. Your ranking is based on the number of points you have.

  • If you are at the top of the rankings, your profile will be drawn (selected) from the list of applications. You will then get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence as a skilled immigrant.

PROVINCIAL NOMINEE PROGRAM (PNP)

The Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) allow Canadian provinces and territories to nominate individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada and who are interested in settling in a particular province. Each Canadian province and territory (except Nunavut and Quebec, which has a different selection system) has its own unique Provincial Nominee Program. Each PNP has at least one immigration stream that is aligned with the federal Express Entry immigration selection system.

Determine your eligibility

Each province and territory’s streams, eligibility requirements and nomination guidelines for their PNP can change without notice.

If you are nominated under a non-Express Entry stream:

  • you will have to apply through the paper-based process, and
  • if the province or territory finds you eligible and nominates you, you will send an application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
If you are nominated under a province or territory’s Express Entry stream, you must:
  • meet their requirements, and
  • meet the minimum criteria for Express Entry
  • this includes meeting the requirements of at least one of the immigration programs it covers

You can use our online tool, Come to Canada, to see if you are eligible. If you are invited to apply for permanent residence, you will submit an online application to IRCC.

2. Apply

To apply for the PNP you must:

  • apply to a province or territory for a nomination,
  • be nominated by that province or territory, then
  • apply to IRCC to become a permanent resident.

Under a PNP Express Entry stream, you will need to complete an Express Entry profile and show that you meet the minimum criteria for Express Entry.

Learn more about applying to the PNP.

3. Check processing times

Find out how long it will take IRCC to process your application under the paper-based process (non-Express Entry streams).

If you apply through Express Entry (Express Entry streams), most complete applications for permanent residence will be processed in six months or less. Since Express Entry is a new system, average processing times are not yet available.

Business Investment

Canada offers the most established and widely-used investment based immigration programs conferring permanent resident status.

The Canadian confederation system of government and the country’s social norms offer a “European alternative” to the more unabashed capitalism of the USA. Canada offers European-style social benefits with fairly high levels of taxation and unparalleled quality of life. Under the Canadian model, business immigrants can enjoy the benefits of a national health care program, affordable first-class education and a national pension system that provides measurable annual income upon retirement.

Business immigration offering permanent admission to Canada comprise of the Quebec Immigrant Investor Program (QIIP), Quebec Entrepreneur program, Quebec Self-Employed, several Provincial Nominee Entrepreneur programs, the Federal Immigrant Investor Venture Capital (IIVC) Pilot Program and the Federal Start-Up Visa program. While the various entrepreneur and self-employed programs are aimed at individuals with a mid-range personal net worth who intend to establish and operate a business in Canada, the investor programs are suited for high net worth individuals who wish to make a passive investment with no obligation to establish a business.

As well, wealthy business immigrants may buy or establish a new businesses in Canada and qualify for a temporary work visa, under federal ‘owner-operator’ policies.  After a period of time, applicants may qualify for permanent residence under a suitable immigration program.
